Flood maps will help you understand your risk of flooding. The State of Maryland in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been systematically updating Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for communities over the past several years. The Maryland Flood Insurance Digital Rate Maps site is designed to guide homeowners as well as communities through the process of determining their current flood risk as well as future flood risk based on the preliminary Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs).

Flood Risks for Homes in Maryland

Flood Risks for Homes in Maryland

Maryland, with its 3,100 miles of tidal shoreline along both the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries and the state's Atlantic Ocean shoreline and coastal bays is highly vulnerable to flooding. Flooding, from hurricanes, rain or storm surge is Maryland's most costly natural disaster. It's not just the coast that is vulnerable to flooding, its anywhere there is tidal waters and anywhere it rains!

Because of its location near the Atlantic Coast, Maryland sees its share of tropical storms, although the Delmarva Peninsula and the outer banks of North Carolina provide a large buffer. The buffer helps Maryland avoid major hurricanes, and mostly it sees the remnants of a tropical system that has already come ashore and released most of its energy. Maryland averages around 30–40 days of thunderstorms a year, and averages around six tornado strikes annually.

Why do you need flood insurance?

  • Homes in high-risk flood areas are required to carry flood insurance.
  • Any property, regardless of flood zone, is susceptible to flooding as most floods are caused by heavy rain or melting snow with already saturated ground.
  • Construction and new development is changing the natural drainage of water making more areas prone to flooding.

What can you do to protect yourself?

  • Purchase flood insurance from FEMA's National Flood Insurance Program or through a Private Market carrier.

What coverage is available?

  • Up to $250,000 of dwelling through NFIP
  • Up to $100,000 of personal property through NFIP
  • Additional limits are available through Private Market carriers or excess flood markets.
